Message from the Athletic Director 2014
With 2014 coming to a close, our athletics program continues to provide our students with extra-curricular sports programs. Our junior tier 2 girls’ volleyball team finished their league with a bronze medal, while the junior tier 1 girls finished just outside of qualifying for the BTPS Finals. I would like to thank Miss Roworth, Amber Cuthbert and Mrs. Tainsh for their time and the tremendous work that they put in all year. Also, I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mandy Christensen, Jenna-Lee Blackhurst and Devin Trennary for their commitment to the senior girls’ volleyball team this year.
It is also an exciting time as for the first time in my six years here, we will be putting a junior girls and junior boys’ team on the floor. It is always positive to see programs begin new life, and as our junior programs grow, so will the interest in basketball and other athletic activities. I will be the head coach of the Jr. Girls, while Mr. Elliott will be the head coach for the Jr. Boys. I would also like to thank Mrs. Lumayko for her commitment to help both of these teams as an assistant coach during practices. To add to the exciting junior program, we are putting a senior boys’ team on the court for the 2nd consecutive year. Thank you to Mr. Artymko for taking this team on and being the head coach.
As we enter 2015, our physical education program enters a new, exciting phase as we are putting new resources from our community Wildcat Wall of Support and our Friends of Hughenden Council to use. New equipment such as basketballs and new floor hockey equipment have been purchased, while our students have transformed the computer room into a ping pong room during the week of the Christmas concert. We will also be introducing the National Archery in Schools Program (NASP) in the coming weeks, so students will have new opportunities to look forward to.
In addition to the new resources we have obtained, our school intramural program has been a great success. Currently, after two events (Indoor Soccer and Volleyball), the standings are:
1st – Grey Griffins (377 Points)
2nd – Blue Bulldogs (283 Points)
3rd – Black Badgers (260 Points)
4th – White Wolverines (253 Points)
In the new year, activities such as Basketball, Dodgeball, Floor Hockey and Slo-Pitch will take place as all teams add to their quest for the Wildcat Cup!
And, finally, I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a safe and prosperous holiday season. The holiday season is a time to share with family and is a very exciting time of year. For the students, take this time to recharge and come prepared for the new year. Happy Holidays!
